how to be a better writing teacher

Matt Glover & Carl Anderson are influential educators you won't want to miss, but don't take our word for it...

"I have read and reread the work of Matt Glover and Carl Anderson for years.
Their ideas and practices are in my DNA.
When I sit beside young people, I think of their work.
They give me insight and energy to move all readers and writers with joy."

Description:

  • This institute is designed for the K-8 teacher who wants to improve or strengthen their writing instruction skills, as well as for the literacy coaches, administrators and curriculum specialists who support them.
  • The theme of this two-day workshop is on the teaching of writing, which is the focus of Carl and Matt's new book, How to Become a Better Writing Teacher.
  • In this institute, we will consider:
    • How do you learn to be a curriculum decision-maker who designs writing units of study thoughtfully and effectively to maximize student growth across the school year
    • How do you individualize instruction in the writing workshop so that students receive the 'just-right' teaching they need to grow as writers?
    • How do you help students learn the craft and process of writing from mentor authors who include published writers, their teachers, and their classmates?
    • How do you teach clearly and precisely in mini-lessons, small group lessons, and writing conferences? How do you do all of this teaching so that step=by=step, you help students become good writers with repertoires of writing strategies and craft techniques, and who know how to use writing conventions?
  • Participants will see a video of work that Carl and Matt have done with children, as well as read and study student writing and mentor texts. During the institute, participants will learn practical strategies they can use as soon as they return to their classrooms and which will help them become better teachers of writing.
