Description:
Number Talks is a classroom practice that utilizes reasoning with mathematical relationships and the role of social interaction in learning to bring students' understandings, questions and misconceptions to the forefront.

September 12th, 2019: Building Fluency and Numerical Reasoning (Grades K-5)
This session will highlight the use of Number Talks as an instructional shift designed to build computational fluency using accurate, efficient and flexible computation strategies.  As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
-Understand the principles and foundations of Number Talks
-Consider student misconceptions in developing numerical reasoning
-Use student-invented strategies for whole-number computation
-Lead students in grade-level appropriate Number Talks

September 13th, 2019: Fractions, Decimals and Percentages (Grades 3-7)
This session will explore the use of Number Talks as a vehicle for helping students develop fractional reasoning and accurate, efficient and flexible computation strategies.  As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
-Understand the principles and foundations of Number Talks
-Consider student misconceptions when reasoning and operating with fractions
-Lead students in grade-appropriate Number Talks

Target Audience:
In general, this institute is geared towards elementary and middle years educators.  However, specific target audiences are listed above for each day.
